Bamboo in New Mexico

Climate: 5800 - 7200 ft altitude

Margie Krebs-Jespersen is growing three species of bamboo in Albuquerque (5800 ft elevation). She is also growing 18 species of bamboo in the mountains to the east of Albuquerque (7200 ft elevation).

Rain:
Approx 15 inches of rain in a year (8 in Albuquerque )- most in August/Sept and some in the way of snow in late Oct and again in Jan/Feb

Spring & Summer: hot dry days (very little humidity), cool nights lots of sun ...and more sun ...and more sun

Zone 6 to 7 (USDA) or Zone 2/10 (Sunset)
alkaline soil, very little humus
cold winters (our first freeze on the mountain is early)

October ... and we can't plant tender perennials until late May ... Albuquerque can be a little sooner. It can get well below zero, usually at night then warming up significantly during the day.
